Fun fact: this pile of fresh-cut butternut looks like a still-life in drawing class. Studio cat confirms it: Abe’s noggin is about twice life-sized. The Abe Lincoln/Conan O’Brien love-child on my workbench is progressing nicely. The lips, beard, and jawline need tweaking, I think. Wifey says no, but I’m pretty sure she’s just convinced I’ll screw it up. I’d swear the squirrels are eating according to some algorithm... #wip #wip potus sculptus Is that a #cat in your #studio or are you just happy to see me? 🐈🙈 I’m excited about throwing a few pots after work today. This Cat-Blocking Seat Stealer couldn’t care less. The indifference just drips off the whiskers. Super pumped to have my very own, brand new, analog scale – even though a digital scale is perhaps easier to use, more precise, and longer-lasting. There’s nothing like the right tool at the right time. The Griffin Grip is like that. Just ‘cause. I admit to being a bit lazy in the studio sometimes. I wanted to take a break after only throwing a little, but the Doobie Brothers had a other plans for me. Hashtag sit down, shut up, get back to work, and shake your money-maker... Artificial flowers arranged for my in-laws’ gravestone. #getwell ‘Round the pot in 24 seconds... Ha ha! 😁 Test tiles/test tubes. Wheel-thrown or hand-made test tiles are typically much easier to make than these things, but I like extruded tubes in the long run. They hold up better and present well. Workin’ hard in the “office,” makin’ test tiles, watchin’ football. Results from my watery underglaze experiments are promising – if you like this outer space/bird shit/crashing waves kind of thing (I do!) Initially, I applied color to bisqued pots soaked in water. This plate, however, came from a set decorated at the unfired, leatherhard stage. For I number of technical reasons, I like this method better. Onward... Interesting #pattern amongst the #residue in the #clay #sink. Pics of your pets are a bit like baby pictures (“Have you seen my kid??”), but damn if this isn’t a hell of a way to cat-block me from weighing out glaze tests. Pretty sure she knows what she’s doing. Loving this watercolory thing on my pots. The random drama makes each piece exciting to decorate. You never know what you’ll get. I would pay obscene amounts of money to be able to repeat these results. And, before you ask – no, I don’t know how I did it. 🤷🤦 With the stool on a shelf in front of the window, Cat finds a new spot to nap in the studio. The result is very Mondrian-esque. Belly up, Buttercup... All that liquidy, ooie-gooie spewie lays on its back this time around, nestled in a bed of sand. Firing to ^ oh six. One of our first big planters came out of the kiln cracked. It was bad enough the doctor prescribed a “cold treatment” (patch it up with putty and slap on a coat of house paint). No glaze fire here. Me and Wifey likey. Loading a #kiln can make you #glum, when you’re under the gun to get it done. It’s just no fun. Quick notes taken after lunch resulted in this plate. Really diggin’ the loose, watery look. Kind of a busted #majolica, actually. It’s not perfect. I cain’t say, “Ship it!”, but I like where it’s going, yo... #👨‍🎨 I’m one of those dudes who just doesn’t see color or patterns real well in my work. Ain’t much of a #decorator – but I want to get better. So, I’m #exploring. This time, trying different ways to #pour #color on my #pots. #Experimenting with different #surfactants and #dispersingagents (smart ass way of saying I’m playing with #silicone).
